Percival Scientific was the first within the environmental chamber industry to engineer and build a low-temperature chamber. WeatherEze Control System

Revolutionary WeatherEze offers you two powerful software options for chamber control:
  • The simulated Environment option allows you to select any location on the globe. This program will simulate the average weather and incident radiation conditions at the site with a user-selected starting date and time.
  • The Real-time Control option allows you to choose real-time control for any location across the globe. While the United States and Europe have ample real-time weather data available, some limitations exist in isolated areas because the global density of real-time weather data is variable.


WeatherEze allows your chamber to have real-time duplication of the temperature, relative humidity, and solar lighting for any global location. Data entry is accomplished either by latitude and longitude or simply clicking on a world map. Updating of actual conditions is accomplished through continuous connection to the internet and a real-time link to METAR data. This allows unsurpassed realism in duplicating the natural environment within the chamber. The ability to fully duplicate temperatures are limited by the maximum and minimum temperature control of the chamber, typically 4° - 44° C (with the chamber's internal lights off) and 10° - 44° C (with the chamber's internal lights on).

If real-time duplication is not desired, the control software has the ability to model the last 30-year average climatic conditions of temperature, relative humidity and solar quantity and quality for any site on the globe. Even without the real-time link, WeatherEze still achieves a new level of environmental simulation.

Solar Quality and Lighting

The WeatherEze program has three options for lighting control:
  1. Solar quality at any location is modeled and simulated, limited only to the capacity of the lighting outputs available, as seen in the graph.
  2. Solar intensity is used to establish lighting control, matching intensity rather than quality of light.
  3. Manual settings are also available


Chamber Status Screen

This screen provides feedback for set points, actual temperature, lighting, relative humidity, carbon dioxide control and the current simulation panel also allows you to update intervals from one to 60 minutes, override the chamber update frequency and conduct a chamber update at your request.

METAR Screen

The METAR tab allows for real-time linkage with weather anywhere on the globe, and the METAR screen shows the current conditions for the locations selected in the setup wizard. These real-time readings are used to control the set points for the chambre, the heart of the real-time linkage. Real-time weather data, updated hourly, is what allows WeatherEze to control the chamber and mimic conditions anywhere on the globe.

The METAR screen offers two options if errors are encountered with the real-time data. WeatherEze will hold the last reading until a new reading is retrieved, or default to simulated data. There is also a check box on the METAR tab that allows you to toggle back and forth between real-time and simulated data.

Temperature, Humidity and CO2 Screens

All living organisms respond to alterations in environmental conditions, particularly from fluctuations in air temperature, CO2, and variations in incident solar radiation quality and duration. In addition to the lighting control panel, the temperature, humidity and CO2 control panels shown allow you to simulate conditions around the globe.

Comprehensive Warranty Program

All products manufactured by Percival Scientific are warranted to be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of 24 months from the shipment data. Percival's obligation under this warranty is limited to the no-charge repair of defects on parts, labour and transportation. This warranty applies to all products shipped from Percival Scientific after February 1, 1994. Percival Scientific's own shipping records showing the date of the shipment shall be conclusive in establishing the warranty period. This warranty covers the replacement or repair of defective or broken parts for the un-expired portion of the original warranty.

This warranty does not include parts or elements which outlive their normal expected terms of usefulness (e.g. light bulbs). This warranty is limited to products purchased and installed. It does not apply to damage caused by accident, misuse, fire or acts of God. It does not apply to damage caused from failure to properly install, operate or maintain the product(s) in accordance with the printed instructions provided by Percival Scientific. This warranty is in lieu of any other warranties, expressed or implied, including merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

IntellusUltra™Connect with Remote Connectivity (Option PERC9)

The IntellusUltra™Connect system (with remote connectivity) is a single-board electronic control-panel which withstands all levels of pressure. The panel can be programmed in any of the following ways:
  • Manual settings can be modified and run
  • Configure, modify and run the diurnal (day and night) single-step program-settings
  • Configure, modify and run the 24-hour multi-step programming in real-time (ramping) mode
  • Configure, modify and run the 24-hour multi-step program in elapsed-time (non-ramping) mode.
  • Configure multi-step programs into a sequence. Multiple programs can be linked together to simulate 'natural conditions'.
  • Dual-protection of our experiment via the integrated-yet-independent temperature limit shutdown system. Once the chamber is above the preset temperature limit, the chamber's computer system shuts down until the preset temperature has been reinstated.

Monitor Screen

View current set points and process values, alarm status, alarm settings, program operation mode, program steps and controller time on the Monitor Screen.

Diurnal Program Screen

Easily edit and run day and night settings using the Diurnal Program Screen. All lights automatically turn on during the day period and turn off during the night period.

Edit Program Screen

Create and edit multi-step programs using the Edit Program screen. Up to a total of 560 program steps can be created. Up to a total of 70 programs can be created. Refer to IntellusUltraTM Specifiatio sheet for details on how programs and program steps are divided between programming modes.

E-Mail Setup

Add up to five e-mail addresses for alarm and chamber status notificaitons. Alarm notifications are sent immediately upon alarm activation. Status notifications can be sent hourly, every six hours, every twelve hours or once per day. Alarm notifications and status notifications can be activated or deactivated separately per e-mail address.

Sequence Program Screen

Link programs together to run different profiles over time using the Sequence Program Screen. Up to 50 programs can be linked together.

IntellusUltraTM Touch Screen Computer System and Control Software

Percival Scientific offers the IntellusUltraTM Control Software and IntellusTMUltra Touch Screen Computer System. The IntellusUltraTM Control Software is a powerful management system that allows you to precisely and effectively control, monitor and collect data from Percival chambers. it utilizes a user friendly graphical interface (GUI) that is intuitive and simple to master. The software can be purchased separately and installed on a Windows based PC locally or remote from the chambers.

The IntellusUltraTM Touch Screen Computer system option is installed directly on the chamber. The IntellusUltraTM Control Software is pre-installed on the IntellusUltraTM Touch SCreen Computer System.

IntellusUltraTM touch screen computer system features:

PERLT-36VL

The 29.7 cubic foot low-temperature chamber offers the ability to measure cold hardiness, freeze tolerance, heat stress, and exposure to a series of temperatures (thus emulating spring-, summer-, fall- and winter-like conditions). The "Constant Temperature Defrost" system allows the chamber to operate at "low temperature" under full lighting without temperature defrost spikes. Glass side walls give a full view of each shelf without disturbing your experiment. The glass is evenly heated over its entire surface, which eliminates condensation.

PERLT-105

The 121.2 cubic foot low-temperature chamber offers the ability to measure cold hardiness, freeze tolerance, heat stress, and exposure to a series of temperatures (thus emulating Spring-, summer-, fall- and winter-like conditions). The "Constant Temperature Defrost" system allows the chamber to operate at "low temperature" under full lighting without temperature defrost spikes. 

Lighting System

PERLT-36VL

Two externally mounted lamp banks (which use F32T8/741 fluorescent lamps) reduce the heat-load inside the chamber. The need to open the chamber and remove the shelves when changing one or more light bulbs is eliminated by the externally-mounted lamp banks, which are separated from the chamber growth space y a side glass wall. The glass is evenly heated over its entire surface, reducing a large amount of the risk of condensation (therefore reducing the risk of problems during your plant-growth experiment). The lamp-banks' light intensity is programmable up to 300 µmoles/m²/s of light irradiance measured six inches from the lamps on two on/off light events, without a decrease in the light-intensity due to the chamber's low temperature. Programming and control of the lighting is done via the IntellusUltraTM real-time controller.

PERLT-105

The counterbalanced lamp bank's height can be adjusted for optimizing light intensity during your experiment. The light fixtures yield up to 980 µmoles/m²/s of light. (This yield is retrieved via a measurement taken at six inches away from the lamp bank). Each lamp within the lamp bank provides a balanced spectrum for plant growth using twin T-5 fluorescent lamps and extended-life tungsten incandescent lamps. (This yield is retrieved via a series of three "on/off" light events.) Two levels of fluorescent-lighting programming and one level of incandescent-lighting programming can be done via the IntellusUltraTM real time controller.

Cabinet Construction


PERLT-36VL

The chamber's interior is constructed of 22-gauge electro-zinc plated steel. Its exterior is contructed of 18-gauge exterior electro-zinc plated steel. Welded seams and joints exist on the chamber's outer and inner walls. The inner wall is supported by non-compressing/non-thermal conducting  material locking the inner liner in place without a metal-to-metal bond to the outer case. Each side wall has evenly heated glass with viewing dimensions of 49 inches by 21.5 inches. Externally-mounted lamp banks exist on each of the chamber's side walls. If enough room is allowed on either side of the chamber, the lamp banks swing like a door, thus allowing full viewing of each shelf without disturbing the experiment. Please note: you must allow clearance for the lamp banks to swing outwards when replacing the bulbs within them.

PERLT-105

The chamber's interior and exterior walls are constructed of 22-gauge electro-zinc plated steel. Welded seams and joints exist on the chamber's outer and inner walls. The inner wall is supported by non-compressing/non-thermal conducting material locking the inner liner in place without a metal-to-metal bond to the outer case. The chamber contains a stainless steel floor, as well as a parforated aluminum channel work bench situated inside the chamber. The chamber floor is equipped with a floor drain with attahced three-quarter-inch plastic tubing. The chamber cabinet is attached to an angle frame base containing heavy duty swivel casters.


Insulation


The chamber is built with a woodless construction using CFC Free insulation. The overall wall thickness is two inches (or 5.1 centimeters), which is ample insulation for maintenance of the stated temperature range. 

Door

PERLT-36VL

The chamber contains one door with an opening of 29.2 inches by 57.5 inches (or 74 centimeters by 46 centimeters) which provides full access to the chamber's interior. The magnetic gasket provides a tight seal to the door frame.

PERLT-105

Two door openings (each measuring 26 inches by 48.5 inches, or 66 centimeters by 123.2 centimeters) provide full access to the chamber's interior. The magnetic gasket provides a tight seal to the door frame.

Interior Space

PERLT-36VL

The interior space for this chamber is 29.7 cubic feet (or 0.8 cubic meters) with a total work area of 10.8 square feet (or 1 square meter) provided on two tiers (shelves).

PERLT-105

The interior space for this chamber is 121.2 cubic feet (or 3.4 cubic meters) with a total work area of 15.9 square feet (or 1.5 square meters) provided on one tier (shelf).

Shelving

PERLT-36VL

Two tiers (two shelves) made of white epoxy coated steel wire exist within the PERLT-36VL low-temperature chamber. Each shelf is 27 inches deep by 25.1 inches wide (or 68.6 centimeters by 63.8 centimeters). the shelves are avertically adjustable in half-inch increments. The maximum growing height is 43.8 inches with one shelf installed, and 21.5 inches with two shelves installed.

PERLT-105

This chamber contains a single-tiered perforated aluminum work bench.

Finish

The interior and exterior of the chamber painted with highly reflective, environmentally friendly, high temperature baked white powder coating.

Refrigeration

PERLT-36VL

The constant temperature defrost system allows the chamber to operate at a low temperature under full lighting without temperature defrost spikes. Typically, low-temperature systems are defrosted by the diversion of hot gas through the coil or via electric heaters, causing a significant temperature spike during the defrost period. The dual-coil system has been utilized in order to maintain a constand low temperature within the chamber. The coils work in tandem with a damper system: as one coil is cooling, the other coil is defrosting via hot air within the chamber. The chamber uses a self-contained water-cooled condensing unit witha hot gas bypass system for: continuous compressor operation, extended life, and close temperature control. This continuous running condensing unit ensures precise temperature control and provides cooling-coil-defrost via hot gas without the need of electric heaters. An optional outdoor all-weather air-cooled condensing unit or a self-contained air-cooled condensing unit is available upon request.

PERLT-105

Typically, low-temperature system are defrosted by the diversion of hot gas through the coil or via electric heaters, causing a significant temperature spike during the defrost period. The dual-coil system has been utilized in order to maintain a constand low temperature within the chmaber. The coils work in tandem with a damper system: as one coil is cooling, the other coil is defrosting via hot air within the chamber. An air flow damper switches with the coil, thus preventing the coil being defrosted from putting its heat into the system. The coil being defrosted is closed off from the rest of the system during its defrost cycle. A self-contained water-cooled condensing unit with a hot-gas-bypass system is used for continuous compressor operation, extended life and close temperature control. This continuous-running condensing unit ensures precise temperature control and provides defrosting for the cooling coils via hot gas without the need of electric heaters. An optional outdoor all weather air-cooled condensing unit or self-contained, air-cooled condensing units are available upon request.
 
Temperature Range

PERLT-36VL

The temperature range for this chamber is -10° - 44° C (± 0.5° C) while the chamber lights are on and -12° - 44° C (± 0.5° C) while the chamber lights are off.  The chamber gives greater temperature uniformity, and allows for a lower temperature limit under full lighting.

PERLT-105

The temperature range for this chamber is -12° - 44° C (± 0.5° C) while the chamber lights are off and 0° - 44° C (± 0.5° C) within the work area on the horizontal plane while the chamber lights are on (using the full fresh air option).

Temperature Safety Limit Controls
(Experimental Protection)

Temperature safety limit controls include: adjustable high and low temperature controls, and audible alarms. Visual indicators are also provided. Controls shut down all power to the chamber, resulting in activation of the alarm(s). When the temperature returns to the normal range the system automatically resets.

Electrical Service Requirements

PERLT-36VL

120-208/1/60 R.L.A. - 15 amps (total) are required for a standard chamber. The minimum circuit capacity required to run this chamber is 20 amps per leg. The grounded cord(s) and plug(s) are provided. Please consult your Territory Manager when adding accessories to the chamber.

PERLT-105

120-208 VAC/3 phase/60 Hz (including 4 wires plus a grounding wire) are required to run a standard chamber. The total amperage draw for standard chambers without any options or accessories is 20 amps/leg. Please consult your Territory Manager when adding options or accessories to the chamber.
